- At Sherington each child is treated as an individual and close attention is paid to their progress.
- We plan our lessons with clear learning objectives. We take these objectives from the National Curriculum or the National Literacy or Numeracy Strategy. Our lesson plans contain information about the tasks to be set, resources needed and the way we assess the children's work. We use continuous teacher assessment to support children's strengths and improve on their weaknesses. We evaluate all lessons so that we can modify and improve our teaching in the future.
- In the Foundation Stage, continuous teacher assessment is used to complete each child's Individual Foundation Stage Profile. The Foundation Stage Profile is reported to parents at the end of their child's first year in school.
- In Year 2 all children are assessed under the national system called SATs (Standard Assessment Tests). These are made up of national test papers in English and Maths, along with teacher assessments in English, Maths and Science. Please try not to take your child out of school during term time in Year 2 as it can affect their performance and be unsettling for them.
- These assessments are reported to parents at the Summer Term Parental Consultations.
Key Stage 1 Assessments
- All pupils are statutorily assessed in their final year of Key Stage 1. This means that all children in Year Two will complete their SATs (Standard Assessment Tasks) in May. They are assessed in English (reading, writing and spelling), Mathematics and Science.
- Following their assessments the children receive a 'level' in each of the above areas.
- Level One is below average
- Level Two is an average score for a typical 7-year-old
- Level Three is significantly above the average expectations
- Working Towards (W) means that a child is working towards or yet to achieve level one.
- Children with learning difficulties are unlikely to achieve the average score of Level Two, because they are not a typical 7-year-old. However, in their own terms they will have made progress appropriate to their abilities.
- Sherington School is committed to ensuring that all children achieve to the best of their ability.
