  23 July 2006 - Last minute news!

  • We had a fantastic trip to visit our sister school, St Andrew’s CE First, recently saved from closure. A lovely day in Great Linford Park with our new ‘buddies’ was greatly complemented by the weather and a superb lunch prepared for both schools by our own Lisa Rogers.
  • Sports Evening was another great success with the PTFA raising funds for the Leavers Activity. All the children were winners in terms of commitment and sportsmanship. Only one team could take the coveted ‘Feasey Trophy’ and this year Mrs Feasey (our umpire and scorer) presented it to the red team who did a triumphant lap of honour.

  • Climbing the 'mini Stonehenge'
  • Now that parents and children have been informed of this year’s ‘test’ results we can publicly congratulate all of Class 2 on meeting and exceeding many of the targets set for them this year. Year 2 achieved 100% success at the expected ‘Level 2’ for their age and exceeded our challenging school targets for Level 3 (working above the nationally expected standard for 7 year olds. Additionally Year 3 recorded excellent results in their optional SATs. They just as impressively built upon their successes last year and made excellent progress from that Year 2 starting point (in at least one case gaining an additional 12 ‘value-added points’ over the year when an acceptable average gain would be 2+ points!).
  • Leaver’s assembly was a poignant affair saying goodbye to all of Class 2 who were presented with a leaving gift from staff and Governors by The Rev Mandy Marriott.
  • So we say Goodbye and Goodluck to all our leavers as they move onto new schools. We are very proud of what they have achieved whilst they have been with us and hope they will take their many happy memories with them as they move on to the next step in their lives.
  • and Lisa's lunch to keep us going
  • Education is always looking to the future and next year is no different as we move forward into a new phase. Year 3 pupils will now enter Key Stage 2 in Middle or Combined Schools. Inevitably, for us this will mean changes although our professional adult : pupil ratio will continue to be excellent, even enhanced.
  • In the future Sherington will educate children from Reception (Foundation Stage 2) through to Year 2 (end of Key Stage 1). Therefore from September, as we change and move to this new structure in education we will be known as Sherington CE School. Thanks are due to Caroline Leslie for updating our logo from her original drawing (did you spot the change above?).
  • So, as the wise person said, we can never step into the same river twice. No teacher would ever claim to have taught in the same school twice. We, the staff, at Sherington CE School remain passionate about our future, the onward progress that is possible and the support of our other ‘partners’, children, parents, church and community that will enable us all to move on.

Busy in Class 2
  • Writing this for a deadline near the end of term gives us a chance to reflect upon a greatly successful year at Sherington School. Our themed weeks, very competent students and many supportive visitors (both occasional and regular) have all added to the overall life and culture of a ‘small school doing big things’.
  • We sadly say ‘goodbye’ to double the number of pupils this year. Our Years 2 & 3 both move on to Lovat and other schools to continue building upon the secure foundations laid down in Sherington. In the future we will be a smaller school but thereby no less focussed, striving to support individual children’s learning and development in our ‘family’ setting.
  • Playing in the Golden Boat - an exercise of the Pupil Voice
  • Recent news encompasses further work developing our Every Child Matters and Pupil Voice initiatives. The former saw a half term of school assemblies mapping the children’s knowledge and achievements and displaying them using new software on the interactive whiteboard. Our Pupil Voice work for the year saw us presenting classroom research involving children’s own planning and evaluations at local and national forums for other teachers.
  • In the immediate future please note the following dates;
    • Tuesday 4th July - Class 2 at the MK Music Festival
    • Friday 14th - Sports Evening & PTFA ‘fair’
    • Friday 21st - School closed for staff training
  • We reopen to the children, including many new faces, on Wednesday 6th September 2006.
  • All the staff and Governors wish to thank the many members of the community who have supported us this year and we look forward to our continuing partnership in the future.

Smiles in the rain!
  • The ‘drought’ was broken just in time to celebrate our “Outdoor Week” specialising in Literacy and ICT. Local authority advisers Carole Smith and Mike Lewis led the week’s cross-curricular work based upon first-hand outdoor activities. This week was planned as part of our response to the Government’s Excellence & Enjoyment and involving our Pupil Voice school-circle in it’s evaluation for the future. Lisa Rogers, having valiantly tidied the kitchen, once again prepared a lovely hot lunch for children and adults alike.

  • Interesting beetlesMrs Smith helped us search for our 'seed' ideas
  • Our friends from Pre-school have begun their summer term visits for curriculum liaison which will lead into the induction programme for those continuing their schooling in the village.

  • Using technology to share and develop ideasUsing a digital video camera to record our observations
  • Children and their families are to be invited to join in the open-garden weekend by designing and making a themed mini garden based on one of the traditional wedding anniversary gifts.

  1 May 2006

  • The children celebrated May Day in the traditional manner by dancing around the maypole on The Knoll, watched by a large crowd of villagers, plus many visitors from Sherington's twin village, Sameon in France.
