Sherington CE School
School Activities April to August 2005

  24 July 2005

  • Our school year ended with a plethora of events and activities that emphasised how many areas of continuity we have established while still responding positively to new opportunities and change. We said goodbye to our cohort of Year 3 pupils and wish them all good fortune in their new schools.
  • Hannah Selvey is this year’s popular recipient of the Feasey Cup for the pupil taking most advantage of her time at Sherington School. At the same time our new cohort of Reception children have settled remarkably quickly into their induction programme and already established ‘ownership’ of the classroom and other facilities for the Foundation Stage.
  • Sports Day - everyone a winner
  • Mr Jeremy Hines kindly brought his vintage Bentley ‘The Old Bent’ for a morning’s work on the historical aspects of transport and journeys in Class 1. Our point of comparison was Mr Storey’s Ford Mondeo which came a far distant second as a far as the children were concerned. We were joined on this day by colleagues and pupils from the parallel class at St. Andrew’s CE First School with whom we have links in the MK small schools network and Mrs Sally Megram from the Early Years Team.
  • Sports’ day was a great success and many thanks to the stewards form Lovat Middle School who helped us to organise and run the evening's events. This year the red team were the overall winners on points but all the children excelled at a variety of activities. Over £200 was raised for the British Heart Foundation during our Skipathon and other events raised money for Willen Hospice (Lisa’s lunches), £50 and (Grow a Sunflower) £50.
  • Mrs Vanessa Gwynn opens the new outdoor classroom
  • Our new outdoor classroom was finally opened by Mrs Vanessa Gwynn, Corporate Director, Learning & Development Directorate in an informal ceremony at which the PTFA through Lisa Rogers supplied a welcome ice-cream to the children. An after school viewing was arranged for the village community by the Governors.
  • We are pleased to announce that Mrs Annette Borner has agreed to continue to teach both classes on Wednesdays as part of workforce re-modelling procedures designed to release teaching staff for work on planning, preparation an assessment.
  • Mrs Gwynn and Mrs Bourne
  • Congratulations to Mrs Lund who has passed her Newly Qualified Teacher Induction. Also to Mrs Bourne, who has been awarded the first part of her National Primary Headteachers Qualification, after a great deal of extra work and study beyond her normal work load in school. We are also most fortunate in having many parents who support the school through helping in class and we wish to recognise the contributions of Betty Feasey, Celia Wing, Barbara Gotts, Pam Fielding and Joyce Tranter who have all added their own time and skills to the benefit of the children’s learning - our primary purpose!
  • Finally we wish to thank all those who have responded to our survey of views about the school. Together with the feedback from our end-of-year parent consultations, external audits, letters and reasons given for choosing Sherington School the results are overwhelmingly positive. “A school where the happiness and commitment of staff is picked up by the children”, “The children are so happy and have their own personalities”, “Relationships are open”.
  • A very good summer to you all and we await the challenges that a new school year brings.

  Photo Update - 6 July 2005

Induction afternoon; 'old hands' looking after new pupils
  • Our new cohort spent a very enjoyable first induction afternoon in Class 1, with the 'old hands' helping the new pupils.

  News - June 2005

  • Class 1 had a further visit from Sherington Pre-School and we spent a very busy and hot afternoon playing games and having a mini sports practice.
  • Further thanks are due to the parents and helpers who have helped in refurbishing the old swimming pool area; our VIP visitor (Mrs Gwynn from Milton Keynes LEA) will officially open the new outdoor classroom on Monday 18th July at 1.30pm.
  • The Governors of the school would like to invite any interested members of the village to view the new facility at 3.30pm after the children go home.
  • We have been fortunate to have Miss Sophie Shkurko on work experience from Ousedale School. Sophie has been working in Class 1 under the guidance of Mrs Ravilious and we wish her well as she returns to begin her final year of study for GCSE.
  • Professor Chris Day from Nottingham University spent an interesting morning with both classes gauging our progress toward giving the children a Pupil Voice including a whole-school circle time to discuss the new games introduced by Mrs Temple and Mrs Tite at lunch times.
  • Mrs Rogers of the PTFA organised a ‘Yellow Day’ in support of Willen Hospice. The children dressed in yellow and had ‘yellow-lunch’ including home-made banana cake.
  • Our trip to Warwick Castle is on Tuesday 5th July when both classes will take the opportunity to immerse themselves in a number of historical themes to complete this year’s work.
  • Our Sports afternoon for this year (weather permitting) will take place after school on Friday 15th July starting at 5pm. The children have been practising hard and are ready for the ‘finals’! Let’s hope the adults athletes are just as fit.

    Pre-School Visit
  • Class 1 had visitors from Sherington Pre-School and we spent a very busy afternoon exploring spirals through art work. It was an enjoyable way of meeting some of our new children for next year and for Pre- School staff to see how much our Reception cohort have grown and developed this year. Being the older of the two groups, as well as seeing their ‘favourite old teachers’ (!) was a thrill and we look forward to the subsequent visits later in the term when we will further share the school’s facilities.
  • Thanks are due to the parents and helpers who have put in many hours of help in refurbishing the old swimming pool area; we are nearly, but not quite, there!.

  • Making New Friends
  • Meeting Mr Phil Smith over the manure pile we were able to reassure him that the children would soon be brushing up their Maypole dancing to join in the village event on the Knoll on May 2nd. A slice of tradition that the school is always happy to support.
  • The final day of the Spring term we had a fruitful whole school development session with staff and Governors. Staff then enjoyed a light lunch at ‘Brunches’ in central MK while we exhibited some of the children’s work in a promotional display board opposite the counter. Do have a look when you pass by.
