The St Andrew's and Sherington Church of England Schools' Partnership

Foundation Stage (Early Years Foundation Stage, EYFS)

  • A national revised curriculum for young children was introduced in September 2008 and covers their education until they enter Year 1. This period has now been called The Foundation Stage. The Foundation Curriculum emphasises the importance of play and personal and social skills as vital to young children's educational development. At Sherington we firmly believe that young children learn through first hand experiences based on exploratory and practical activities, and that these activities take place in a lively and stimulating environment.

  • Our Foundation Stage children will be given daily opportunities to develop their language and literacy, mathematical and personal and social skills in a rich and varied way. As the Foundation year progresses, gradual steps are taken so that by the time they enter Year 1 the children can apply their skills in a more formal way. This prepares them for the National Curriculum.
