The St Andrew's and Sherington Church of England Schools' Partnership

  Key Stage 1

  • In Year 1 and 2 the children follow the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum. They are taught the following subjects:
  • English, Mathematics, Science, Information & Communication Technology, Design & Technology, History, Geography, Physical Education, Religious Education, Music and Art.

  • We follow the nationally agreed frameworks for English (National Literacy Strategy) and Mathematics (National Numeracy Strategy) and the recommended QCA schemes of work for all other subjects

  • We enrich the National curriculum by placing an emphasis on the creative arts and physical education as well as PSHE, Citizenship and Cultural, Spiritual and Moral education.

  • The content and delivery of each subject is regularly reviewed. To ensure that children are well-motivated and enthusiastic learners a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies are used. Children will be taught as part of a class group and in small group situations. All year groups have some grouping by attainment for Maths and English. Individual subjects are usually taught as discrete areas, but where there are cross-curricular links a general theme or topic is used to link them.

  • We encourage all our children to become independent, to be responsible for their possessions and to respect the contribution of other children.

  • Currently we have a Reception Class for the Foundation Stage children, with Year 1 working alongside them in Literacy and Numeracy (following the KS1 curriculum). Year 2 are currently taught literacy and numeracy separately, with Year 1 joining them for the other curriculum areas. Some subjects are organised on a two year cycle and the Literacy and Numeracy objectives for each year group are linked with these where possible.

  • A curriculum newsletter is sent to parents each term, which outlines the areas to be covered by the children.
