The St Andrew's and Sherington Church of England Schools' Partnership

  Mathematics

  • A renewed framework was introduced in 2007. This provides a daily maths session.

  • Maths lessons at Sherington, usually, start with a 5 to 10 minute oral and mental starter, this is followed by a whole class teaching session, then differentiated group work and a closing 5 minutes, plenary, session. There is a strong emphasis in the numeracy strategy on mental calculations and the development of mental strategies. It is important that children are able to use their mathematical skills in their everyday lives so there is, also, a strong emphasis on 'problem solving'. Weekly mental maths strategies are given to children in Year 1 and 2 to learn and we encourage parents to help their child learn these during the week.
Maths is fun
  • The acquisition of the appropriate mathematical vocabulary is important. Children are introduced to this vocabulary from the moment they start school and they are encouraged to talk about their work.

  • We have designed a series of maths booklets 'Helping your child at home' and these are sent home to parents at the start of each school year. They include a variety of fun activities you can use at home to help your child with their maths.
