The St Andrew's and Sherington Church of England Schools' Partnership

  Christmas News 2011

  • "Mary had a baby, yes Lord, Mary had a baby yes my Lord". The children of Sherington CE School gave the seasonal story new life with an interpretation whereby the young mother's main preoccupation was knitting the baby's natal blanket. Mary's knitting gave the whole school an opportunity to shine alongside the traditional angel and star and all acquitted themselves well.
With a large proportion of the cast new entrants to school last September they rose magnificently to the occasion, which in Sherington custom, was beautifully presented in St Laud's church with the right mixture of solemnity, celebration and joy that the magic of a new birth should attract. Many thanks are due to those who helped get the show on the road; foremost Annette Borner Musical Director, Sue Temple Wardrobe Mistress and Janeanne O'Loughlin knitting consultant. Jo Cowley and the PTFA made sure the evening performance was suitably refreshed and Rev Mandy Marriott led the prayers. The term ended with a school party and Christmas craft workshops involving the whole school and in which our many friends and volunteers played supporting roles. To these and the wider school community we wished a Happy Christmas break and peaceful new year. CS

  20 November 2011

  • The children of Sherington School marked Remembrance Day with a thoughtful assembly led by Rev. Mandy and a two minute silence at 11 o'clock on the 11-11-11. Even children so young could relate to the themes of loss and care for those saddened or injured by events and marked these times by sensitive responses.

  • Several new volunteers and visitors to the school have been bringing high quality learning experiences to our children. It has been most pleasing to see the return of Mr. Jamie Flegg for some classroom research in his final BEd year. The children have responded very well to his expertise and some innovative new ideas for writing generated by outdoor experiences. The children's voices;
    • He made writing about the Gunpowder (Plot) exciting. JO
    • He's fun, he helps me do good writing. JL
    • I like doing writing with Mr Flegg because I like working with him. He's cool. OA
    • We had a real Gunpowder adventure with Mr. Flegg then we did the writing! TH
    • It takes me back to the old days when he worked with us in Reception. CD

  • Similarly Mrs. Rachel Fielding, gathering experiences for a future application for teacher training, has been working with Years 1 & 2 alongside Mrs. Borner to enrich other curriculum areas.
    • I liked working with her because she is kind and interested in my drawing. AR
    • Mrs. Fielding is nice and it's good to work with different people. OW
    • Mrs. Fielding is a kind person who is a good teacher. She worked with me on my 'Belonging' picture. TB
    • Mrs Fielding is nice. I like to have different people reading with me. AH

  • We are also pleased to welcome former pupil Emily Tucker working alongside early years staff as part of her college course.

  • Emily Ramsden, elegant gymnast in her on right, has been working alongside mum to enable 1:1 and small group high-quality experiences in PE across the school.

  • Our experienced staff gain as much as the children by working with these younger colleagues from the wider community and are most pleased to 'pay back' professionally for the opportunities we were offered in the past.

  • Staff and children from our three schools enjoyed the opportunity to work together again this year on creative themes the first of which is the National Gallery's Take one Picture project. A shared workshop not only gave teachers the chance to share expertise and ideas but also the children who could renew or establish working relationships and friendships with peers from near and afar.

  • Developing these further aspects of Community Cohesion in our small village school setting has been, in many ways, a revelatory experience for some of our children as they meet diversity and difference while discovering that we are all humankind beneath our skins. It is maybe from meeting this variety of children and adults that our children can relate so well to those we remembered who "...shall not grow old as we that are left grow old...".

  • The whole village and visitors from further afield came to enjoy a bonfire celebration organized by the PTFA, a Guy contest and fireworks display expertly handled by Barry and John. Soup made by the children, sausages and buns and hot mulled cider a welcome bonus to the main event. CS

  15 October 2011

  • Autumn crept upon us and we received the offer of free hedging plants from the Woodland Trust to adorn our new fence as well as a 'Jubilee Oak' to be planted on the school site next year by some specially invited local celebrities. One of the signs of autumn was a good crop of pumpkins from our own vegetable plot. These yielded soup and pies as well as a donation to the Harvest Festival collection taken from St Laud's by Mr Phillip Smith to the kitchens at Willen Hospice after our joint celebration with the congregational supper. Also enjoyed in class have been healthy fruit salads made from common and exotic fruits some of which came from our own mini orchard.

  • We will welcome local student volunteers Emily Tucker, Emily Ramsden and Rachel Fielding who working with children across the school as part of their studies will add to the range of people our children meet and interact with during their school careers. Another aspect of our drive to develop Community Cohesion at Sherington School is the partnership with our sister schools (soon to take off in formalized projects for the new school year) as well as the hosting of visits outside the familiar. It was to this end that we hosted two visits from Year 3 classes at New Bradwell School. They came to study the village for their Geography topic and stayed for lunch and a playtime with Sherington children. They proved adept at football and it would be embarrassing to reveal the final score. Fun was had by all and we were most grateful for the lovely gift of a book. CS

  20 September 2011

  • We welcomed Tom, Thomas, Polly, Nell, Elijah, Luca, Jake and Evan into our Reception class as well as our more experienced pupils returning after the long holiday.

  • With a whole-school topic of 'Ourselves' this simple title belies the complexity of some of the conversations we have with our young colleagues. Years 1 & 2 brought back interesting holiday diaries from their varied trips at home and abroad. This initiated our geography topic of 'Travelling Bears' which sees our school soft toys going home to share any journeys our pupils make.

  • The variable summer saw a mixed harvest from our vegetable plots; a nice crop of mixed potato varieties cooked in various ways and sampled for food technology, our traditional pumpkins to make into soup and pies. The parsnips left to fatten for a winter promise of a hot lunch of tomato soup with parsnip chips.

  • Reception and their Year 1 mentors enjoyed a village walk hunting for numbers and found them in many different places and of many different styles.

  • Music tutor Lydia resumed her lunchtime recorder Club and recruited several new members full of enthusiasm.

  • The magnificent donations and collection of Tesco vouchers were exchanged for a set of Yoga mats to enrich our PE lessons with Mrs. Borner. Thank you if you collected them and sent them into school. We always find them useful. CS
